I see the statues of the solders, the Union soldiers and the Confederate soldiers, and it just helps us to believe the past. This casket’s going to help millions to understand and believe that racism, the Jim Crow system, was alive and well in America back in 1955. Many were outraged over Emmett Till’s murder, and many voiced their anger, especially after the acquittal of Roy Bryant and J.W. There were calls for the protection of the civil rights of African American people and rallies took place in different locations.

At the time, it was almost unheard of for Black people to openly accuse whites in court, and by doing so Wright put his own life in grave danger. If she says nothing else, then the protestors have a point. But she will have to dig deeper and put away the metanarratives when dealing with black subject matter. To create a work, I have to become the work and relive the experience of the subject matter for it to become alive on canvas. Unless Dana Shutz is a monster—like the racists who killed Emmett Till—she gained something from the experience of creating «Open Casket.» She is not a monster.
One week ago, the very day the Whitney Biennial opened to the public, artist Parker Bright mounted a location jet ski port leucate protest, via Facebook live video, against Dana Schutz’s painting of a murdered Emmett Till in his coffin. He only knew of the painting in the first place, writer Antwaun Sargeant has pointed out, because of images on social media. Creating the painting is my way of letting him know I cared about his life and what happened to him and that I would not forget him and make sure people remember him as a young bright Black boy, who was kidnapped and died a gory death as punishment for speaking to a white woman. As a teacher, I see Emmett Till in my students every day and worry about their experiences in the world. The work has been the subject of controversy since the Biennial’s opening on March 17.

He asked Wright if he had three boys in the house from Chicago. Till was sharing a bed with another cousin; there were eight people in the small two-bedroom cabin. Milam asked Wright to take them to «the nigger who did the talking». Till’s great-aunt offered the men money, but Milam refused as he rushed Emmett to put on his clothes. Mose Wright informed the men that Till was from up north and didn’t know any better. Milam reportedly then asked, «How old are you, preacher?» to which Wright responded «64».
Mississippi senators James Eastland and John C. Stennis probed Army records and revealed Louis Till’s crimes. Although Emmett Till’s murder trial was over, news about his father was carried on the front pages of Mississippi newspapers for weeks in October and November 1955. This renewed debate about Emmett Till’s actions and Carolyn Bryant’s integrity.
Factually, the child’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, then Mamie Till, had sent her son from Chicago to visit family in Money, Mississippi. His mutilated body was later sent home to Chicago and displayed in an open casket to, as Till-Mobley told the press, “let the people see what I’ve seen.” Photographs of the young boy were published in Jet magazine, the Chicago Defender, and other Black-press outlets. And it’s not just the Whitney, but most museums are stacked with the work of white men, and abstracts at an era in which museums should be doing more social justice and responsible work. Museums still have an elitist, sexist stigma with a racist stench.
Schutz and Johnson came to the gallery with Arlo, who wore a Batman cape and was not thrilled to be there. Schutz explained that Arlo dislikes rooms with a lot of paintings in them. With sculptures, but “very negative about paintings.” Her Trump painting sold quickly, to a collector in Connecticut.
We exist to tell the story of Emmett Till in a way that moves people forward. We use art and storytelling to help process past pains and imagine new possibilities for the future. Anybody who feels compassion, but they must do it responsibly from THEIR perspective and context. However, African Americans have a responsibility to document Black life so the truth is told authentically.
